Registration on this board

#1 Post by rdonnay »

Registration on this board has been temporarily disabled due to the heavy traffic of SPAM registrations.

It has proved impossible to prevent these SPAMMERS from registering on this board therefore this board is open only to eXpress++ and Xbase++ programmers.

If you wish to have an account on this board, please send an email to rogerdonnay@donnay-software.com and I will set up your account for you.

I have been using Captcha for years but it seems not to work.

I just added Q&A Captcha with a question.
I will open up registrations again to see if this works.

does the board offer confirmations on registrations ??

if so, there's probably an (pluugin) option somewhere to drop a registrant if their is no confirmation.

Yes it does. I have been doing that for years.
But lately the Spam bots have been working overtime.
I get 50-100 emails every day asking to authorize a new registered user.
Then I have to go in and delete every one.
This was consuming way too much of my time.

Roger,

when i said confirmation, i didn't mean you confirming.. i meant an email going to the spambot address.. those addresses very rarely reply.. so the registration drops out or never becomes active..

It's called user confirmation vs Admin confirmation. I don't want to give these guys any opportunity to start posting spam messages without my authorization. I'm hoping that the Q&A Captcha works.

On one of my systems, i have user confirmation, and in addition, i have to approve the first message (i can set it from never to 1 - 5 to always) from any new user. I've found that they the bots have NEVER responded to the confirmation email. & I have the first approval to fall back on.

There are not only spambots out there (which are even able to answer captchas) - some spammers are real existing persons.

The only way to keep up with this is what Roger did. Since there may be only few new users every month, it may take less time to confirm everybody manually compared to install a new captcha mod every once a week.

Another idea would be to automatically create a new user account for every new customer. User name and password are handed out with the download instructions for eXpress++.
Best regards,
Tom
