There is no d drive.. this is a minimal notebook/tablet..
temp and tmp pint to
c:\users\ellen\appdata\local\temp
i realize it's a manifest file, but we don't ship it with those names.

Tom,
I don't think so... it may have to do with the windows 10 update which took place after the installation...

With windows 7 we noticed that if you put files on the desktop that were on a network share, they would disappear over the weekend. It appears that a Windows maintenance utility running at 3AM Sunday would clean up the desktop if 5 or 10 or more icons pointing to networked locations existed. We had to turn of that feature. This appears to be somewhat different but I wonder who thinks up these things at Microsoft.

I think they throw darts at a dart board of ideas.
Also, I think they are fans of the "Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle" and we are seeing the first "quantum operating system".
Fast, cheap, predictable. Well 2 out of 3 isn't bad.

Well,
we've narrowed down the issues, and can duplicate the problem..
Our install installs 3 manifest files. But, the lines in the installer that handled the manifest file was incorrect, and the files got installed as ~g*.tmp files. in the data directories.
if we delete these ~g*.tmp files, it looks like windows stops removing the directories. if we install them as manifest files, everyting is also good...
we can reboot the machine with good or bad manifest filenames and, if the network is attached, there's no problem.
But, if the network cable is not connected, the machine moves the directories.
we'll know in a couple of days if this is the entire picture..
