Dear Roger,

Here we are again, or rather, here you are again.
Another year has passed and you still remain a welcome part of our lives.
Your contributions to our community continues to enrich what we do.

You've often said that you're going to retire this year but each time I would just laugh and say that no one will let you.
Well I gave it a lot of thought this time around and I firmly believe you can't just retire.
Over the years I have watched you do things for people that have nothing to do with this community.
Many times you overextended yourself to help people.
I should know, I'm one of them.
And even though there were many times you got frustrated and taken advantage of, you continued to do it.
There were times you didn't even get a thank you or acknowledgement.
In the past I used to lecture you about this but over time I've come to realize that helping people and breathing for you are one and the same.
Stopping either one would prevent you from being who you are.

I'm proud, honored and blessed to call you my friend.
I have come to depend on your guidance and counsel.
There are many things I would never have accomplished without your help.

Happy Birthday Roger.
You deserve every honor, adulation and ovation that life has to offer.

I want you all to know that I intend to keep supporting eXpress++ and this forum for as long as I am able, and fortunately I am in good health (based on my latest VA doctor's report).

On the other hand, I am scaling back on consulting projects so I can have more free time this summer for my new hobby and for reaching out to my local community of veterans. This year marked the 50th anniversary of America's departure from Vietnam.

At the nice old age of 75 years, I am most likely one of the few persons in our Xbase++ community who can say he was living on this earth at the same time as the following famous persons:

Adolph Hitler
John F. Kennedy
Nikita Kruschev
Dwight Eisenhower
Joseph Stalin
Richard Nixon
Mao Tse Dung

The 20th century left marks on our planet unlike any other century. Let's hope that the 21st century will continue with the healing process that marked the end of World War II. At the moment, it's not looking very good for the world.

I am most concerned about my fellow veterans, especially after spending much time with them at the VA hospital, at my Navy reunions, and on motorcycle trips. An average of 22 veterans commits suicide every day. What does this say about the state of the world? We Americans have forgotten about the time in our history when America was truly a great country and did great things for the world. I gave a presentation at our last Navy reunion in San Diego about a time when America could be proud of its place in the world. Those same veterans who put their lives on the line in Vietnam have forgotten our story and instead are reminiscing about a different time in our history, one in which we cannot be proud at all.

Here is my new hobby. I am creating logos using my 3D printer and mailing them to veterans who I have met over the years. They display very nicely in windows with the sun shining thru.

Now that 3 weeks of retirement have passed since my birthday, I realized that retirement isn't going to work for me. I realized that most of my friends are here in the Xbase++ community.

I joined the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), expecting that maybe I would hook up with some veterans of my age and develop some friendships. I realized that I have very little in common with these men. They have nothing to talk about except their old grievances and prejudices. The current president stokes the culture wars and they are happy to assist him. I don't want any part of this.

I'm back baby!!!!
