Who is the Victim?

#1 Post by rdonnay »

The big news today is what Donald Trump said to Chris Matthews in an interview. Chris managed to get him to say that if abortion becomes illegal, then the woman having the abortion should be punished.

There was immediate reaction from both the left and the right taking issue with his statement, and so a few hours later he rolled it back to the standard Republican position which states that the woman is a victim of the crime and that the doctor would be legally responsible. Imagine getting the congress and the Supreme Court to back such position. If I were a Supreme Court judge, I would ask the following questions to the attorneys taking such a position :

Q. Is it your position that abortion is equivalent to murder?

A. Yes

Q. Well then, how is it that a woman can hire another person to murder her unwanted child and not be held responsible? How is she the victim?

A. Abortion doctors will prey upon young women who are vulnerable to their treachery.

Q. How will they go about doing that? Will they advertise on television?

A. No, that would be a crime.

Q. Would the father be held legally responsible for driving her to the place where the abortion is to take place? Would he not be an accomplice?

A. We'll get back to you on that, your honor.

We can see where this is going.

Donald Trump had never thought about the abortion issue so his first response to Chris Matthews question was a very logical answer. It made sense to him that if abortion is illegal and equivalent to murder, then the woman must be an accomplice to the crime. Actually, his position on the issue was more tenable and more logical than the Republican Party position. The "woman is a victim" position is the reason why the case has never been brought back to the Supreme Court since Roe vs Wade. They know they can't win because it has already been decided, but if they keep their constituents believing they will overturn Roe vs Wade then they can get elected, and as long as the woman is "never legally responsible" the whole idea is more palatable to Republicans who have young daughters.

Those who are pro-choice know that if abortion is made illegal, then it can be assured that ALL women will become victims because their rights to control their own body will be taken away by the state.

It is illogical that Americans can believe that China's one-child policy is a basic denial of human rights and in the same breath say that making abortion illegal is a good idea.
