Dear Xbase++ community,

Welcome to the Artica newsgroup. I would like to encourage everybody out
there to ask any type of technical questions about Arctica.

Some basic information about what Arctica is about can be found here:
http://www.alaska-software.com/arctica

However, to give you a more up-to-date idea of the featureset areas Arctica
is all about, here are some definitions:

Unified-SQL: SQL SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE as Xbase++ language extensions
Available for PostgreSQL and ADS Database Server in the first step. ODBC
will come later.

Universal-SQL: Syntactical extension of Unified-SQL. Can be used to perform
SQL operations against any workarea, dbf/ntx/cdx file, Object/Array and XML
data. And of course a mixture of these data-sources.

Pass-Through-SQL: Transparent forwarding of SQL statements to backend
systems such as PostgreSQL, ADS and ODBC.

The PostgreSQL DatabaseEngine plays a special role in the context of the
above mentioned SQL support as this DBE is able to execute
DBF/NTX/CDX/DBT/FPT related operations including indexes, filters, scopes.
In fact, the DBE supports all navigational commands of the Xbase++ language.
Therefore there are no code changes needed to migrate an existing
navigational Xbase++ application to a first-class SQL database such as
PostgreSQL.

Ok, so much about the different areas of Arctica.
Any questions are welcome!

Regards
Steffen F. Pirsig

Where did I go wrong?

Yes, if you follow that link you can read the following:
Shortly after the PostgreSQL Conference 2008 and the release of SL1
Hot news indeed... I'm very disappointed in Alaska and I have very less confidence in the future of Xbase++. I renewed my subscription this week, but it will be the last time if they don't change the way they communicate. We are their customers, it looks to me they forget this. If I would do this with my customers, I could close my business.

have you ever "seen" any Picture or Demo of Arctica ?

Alaska did not made any Presentation of Arctica, did alpha Version work so bad as Alaska dares to show us something ?

what about beta testing ?
how to use as Arctica an new Data Typ ? will it work with existing Source Code (Side Effect) ?

i´m not shure about Arctica ... will it realy "help" us "now" ?

with v1.9.x Alaska present activeX, but util today we just can use 50% (only iDispatch)
with SL1 we got "visual Style", but we still have Problem when using 3PP like Codejock SkinframeWork
( Ownerdraw, GraBackground ) or WDM (Win7 Aero).
SL1 activeX AutomationTranslateColor() often return nonsense and using XBPSYSCLR_TRANSPARENT as Backgound just give Black ...

seems Alaska like to start new technic but do not spend work to "finish" it ... will Arctica be same ?

Hi Jimmy,

I saw the first presentation of Arctica about three years ago in the Netherlands. At the eXpress++ devcon two years ago, we also saw a presentation. It looked very promising.

ok ... i remember now on Devcon 2007, Berlin
Yes Steffen told use something about it, i made a Devcon DVD, but i do not thing thats the Version we talk about now.

i "think" Roadshow will be the "real" Presentation, so why not show us NOW :!: :?:

do they real need 1/2 Year to prepare a Presentation ?
or do they want to "sell" a "beta" Product without User "testing" ?

Hi Jimmy,

They need more than a year to prepare it. On the Alaska website they wrote in December 2009.
Finally, we are in midst of preparing a webcast showing the basic steps to move an existing non-client/server dbf/ntx/cdx based application to the PostgreSQL server. This cast will be announced in due course - so stay tuned and check back in January 2010.
Two years ago, there was also an announcement.
2008-06-13 Reloaded: Xbase++ meets PostgreSQL
And the page which they use now: http://www.alaska-software.com/products ... rview.shtm is available since 22 april 2008.

The name of this thread should be: Sad news of Arctica instead of Hot news. :violin:

Hello Jimmy,
I agree fully, first it is important to make ActiveX working and solving all existing problems. Arcitca is a nice to have, but the complete support of AcitveX is a must for me. The most important step forward for my software would be implementing CodeJock. It seems that the very poor contact to developers from Alaska lead them in the wrong direction. I will not renew my subscription till I have the feeling that the develeopment goes in the right direction. When I look to systems like WINDEV or harbour, I think that I have to change the development system for my future projects. The sad thing is, that when I write this to Alaska, I get no response, they really dont care about the existing customers.

Rudolf
