Xbase++2.0 upgrade

#1 Post by bwolfsohn »

Just received this from Alaska
Dear Xbase++ and Visual FoxPro developer,
Attendees of the forthcoming Xbase++ developer conferences exclusively will receive an automated update for Xbase++ 2.0 according to the following schedule:
- Tuesday, 13th Oct. Southwest Xbase++
- Tuesday, 10th Nov. Frankfurter Xbase++ Tracks
- Tuesday, 17th Nov. xbase:eXchange(), European Xbase++ conference

Releasing a new version only a couple of days before the conference, with the difficulties relating to authorizations seems like it has the potential for a bunch of hiccups...Especially since it seems (i think) you can't have multiple 2.0 versions side by side as you used to be able to do pre 2.0

anybody have and thoughts about this ??

I agree. I'm trying to get out a new eXpress++ release today and now I need to wait to make sure I compile with the latest Xbase++ 2.0. I don't need all this last-minute work.

It is available. No problem installing though it takes the better part of an hour.

Mine installed very fast.
They still didn't fix the problem with the ADS client DLLs.
They still distribute old DLLs that don't work.

You have to copy ACE32.DLL, AXCWS32.DLL and AICU32.DLL from your most current Ads installation to the following folders:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Alaska Software\cxp20\bin
C:\Program Files (x86)\Alaska Software\xpp20\lib
C:\Program Files (x86)\Alaska Software\xpp20\runtime

That is correct. Only version 11.x and 10.x are supported versions. They should not be shipping anything older than 10.x, especially given that with 1.9x they had to issue a patch for the 11.x version for it to work properly.

I will also mention this to Stephan/Andreas again.

I talked about the ADS client DLLs issue to Andreas at the conference.
Hopefully, they will distribute the 11.0 clients in the next update.

It only makes sense. With their use of standard windows locations and the stated desired to not cause difficulties for the standard new user, it only make sense to not cause unneeded questions/issues by shipping non-supported client drivers for the ADSDBE functionality.

After talking w/ numerous foxpro people at the conference, i've come to the conclusion that alaska needs to do a large discount for foxpro people on the standard version to get them started.. at this point, i think they should consider offering it to the attendees only in a limited time offer.. (a competitive upgrade discount, so to speak)

if they do, they'll make it up on the backend with renewals and upgrades..

"alaska needs to do a large discount for foxpro people on the standard version to get them started."

We totally agree on this.
In fact, I think they should let them have it for free.

I did that with eXpress++ at the devcon.
I would much rather have developers using my software for free than have them pay for shelfware.

Eventually, most will become a paying customer.
