Connecting to an ADS AIS server

Has anyone been successful at connecting to an Advantage Server via AIS?
I have had no need to do this until now.
I want to connect to a server via the internet, hopefully using a connection string in the same way I connect via a local area network.
Before opening up ports on the server, I want to know what is the feasibility of this.
I don't expect to get large datasets across the WAN, just server info, like I do with AdsMgt.exe.
